New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
